Beliefs about teaching reading

• Extensive reading - all learners should be encouraged to practise extensive reading outside class to improve their reading and general English skills. - I just love reading and think it is a good habit to have. So, speaking about encouraging reading in English, I say Yes.

• Dictionaries - learners should be encouraged to use dictionaries during reading lessons. - Learners should be encouraged to try working the meaning of unknown words out from the context.

• Authentic materials - authentic materials are more valuable than simplified texts for the language learner. - It depends on the level of students and the purpose of reading.

•   Subskills - teachers should teach students how to use subskills like scanning and skimming as they do not come naturally. - I agree. Maybe it's not necessary for L1, but I do spend quite a big amount of  time teaching reading strategies every year in every form.
