As for me, Gap between L2 level and target level may serve as a
wonderful motivation, especially if the target level is shown by
classmates or other students of the same age or even younger ones. If
things are happening this way, students may feel/see the first results
rather quickly. The language level can also be measured by doing certain
set of exercises or passing exams, and the result of such activities
(score/points/level/degree) becomes an obvious evidence of learner's
progress, as success indication deepens the motivation.
I think Exams is a key motivational factor for the majority of
school leavers, as if they are passed successfully, the dream of
entering the desirable educational institution becomes reality. The
preparation to the exams can also develop learner autonomy, because it
demands taking responsibility for learning.
